NE CHANGE RIEN
by Pedro Costa
Ne change rien was born as a result of a friendship uniting actress Jeanne Balibar, sound engineer Philippe Morel and Pedro Costa.
Jeanne Balibar, singer, from rehearsals to recording sessions, from rock concerts to classical singing classes, from an attic in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines to the stage of a Tokyo café, from Johnny Guitar to Offenbach's La Périchol.

Our Beloved Month of August
(Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto)
by Miguel Gomes
Deep in the Portuguese mountains, the population and its activities swell during the month of August. The people come home, set off fireworks, fight fires, perform karaoke, jump off the bridge, hunt wild boar, drink beer, make children. If the director and his team had gone straight to the essential, resisting the festivities, the synopsis would be reduced to: “This Dear Month of August follows the romantic relations of the father, the daughter and her cousin, musicians in a dance hall music group.” Love and music, then.

Dealing with the loss of a loved one. In an apartment, the man tries to get used to the disembodied space where his father lived. A couple expecting a baby live in the remote countryside but one night the husband goes out to never come back. These men and women seem anesthesized in their overwhelming grief and lugubrious aura. “Sandro Aguilar's strange, elliptical debut feature more than fulfils the promise revealed in his
numerous experimental shorts. A lugubrious man named Rui (António Pedroso) visits his dying father in a Lisbon hospital, where he meets an unnamed pregnant woman (Isabel Abreu), survivor of a car accident in which her lover has died. But have they met before and if so when? The zone of the Portugese title refers to the emotionally-charged space of the hospital, where much of the action takes place, but equally could refer to a Lynchian liminal space between life and death, where familiar narrative and temporal logic is suspended.
If that sounds forbiddingly cerebral, it's anything but. Uprise's formal daring is anchored by beautifully weighted lead performances and a perfectly sustained downbeat mood; the viewer is gradually drawn by phenomenal cinematography and sound design into an immersive realm where certain scenes have an almost uncanny potency - small wonder that the film haunts you for days after seeing it. Aguilar is part of a thriving experimental auteur scene in Portugal that includes the likes of Miguel Gomes and Joao Pedro Rodrigues, channelling the anarchic spirit of João César Monteiro. That said, Aguilar is very much his own man, and on the evidence here seems destined to become one of Portugal's brightest talents.”

A portrait of António Campos, the exceptional filmmaker that had been called an “amateur”, and one of the most unique directors of Portuguese Cinema by capturing the country on film during the 1960’s and 70’s. Often considered a director on the fringe, solitary, instinctive; Campos represents the passion to film.

Bartolomeu Cid dos Santos (1931-2008), engraver and painter, was one of the great artists of the 20th century. His is the crepuscular world of the Empire in its twilight hour, and he created the first metaphors criticizing Portuguese colonialism. And which arose, through a renewed vitality, against the New World Order. He was aware, along with Eliot, that “both the past and the future are here in the present”.

Nuno Teotónio Pereira is above all known for his work as an architect. Yet throughout his life, although he never stopped being an architect, he was much more than that. Even still, what if all those other roles he played in life, emerged from his primary role as an architect? This “portrait” of Nuno Teotónio Pereira does not intend anything beyond an introduction to his life and his work; as the achievements of an entire lifetime can never fit into one singular film.

Inhabited Painting
(Pintura Habitada)
by Joana Ascenção
A glimpse into the universe of Helena Almeida, an artist who, since the late 60`s developed a body of work in which she explores the limits of self-representation, and the frontiers of different media, be it painting, drawing, photography or video.
Rejecting the notions of a biography, Inhabited Painting is a film not about the artist, but about her work and its constructions. The film focuses on the various elements involved in the elaborate creative process, from the first studies until the exhibition of the finished works.
The fragmented nature of the film, the relevance of the studio, and the juxtaposition of sounds and images of different origins, attempt to convey the will and spirit of Helena Almeida`s works by avoiding direct illustration.

Inhabited Painting is na outstanding portrait of the contemporary artist Helena Almeida, one that refuses to indulge to the visual, privileging instead a rigorous expression in framing and editing. (…) It´s a film of an unrelenting beauty.
Ramiro Ledo, Cultura Galega
In Inhabited Painting, the biography of the artist is far from being the centre of the film – that we rarely see her face only makes it clearer. The goal isn`t to portray a “figure”, but to expose the relationship between an artist, the way she works, and her body of work. To see how her body (her hands, the main example), inhabits her painting, photographs, and the videos she makes.

A portrait of the unique personality of Aldina Duarte, a girlish lady, who sings the “fado” out of conviction and love. The film profiles her, unveiling her personality, travelling with her on a journey across her city, Lisbon, visiting the places that she most loves and knows so well, exposing herself as a free and open, generous and lively, innocent but wise woman, with the straightforwardness and a certain spice full of prudishness that are so identifying to Aldina Duarte.

Bab Sebta
by Frederico Lobo & Pedro Pinho
The world is globalizing. Borders are fading. Markets liberalize. Exotic destinies proliferate. Multitudes of travellers circulate, capturing and amalgamating remote landscapes into tiny cameras. In the blink of an eye, goods cross hemispheres. In Europe's Southern border, a vast part of the world population is persistently excluded from this new reality. In this side, insurmountable barriers are consistently raised, drawing imaginary and transitory borders – invisible to the frantic flux of people and goods going from the North to the South, but impossible to cross for the men and women who decided to migrate in the opposite direction. BAB SEBTA project springs from the perplexity produced by the events of September 2005 and the images then broadcasted. The massive attacks of Sub-Saharan migrants to the borders of Ceuta and Melilla, in which an indeterminate number of people died, led us to start off a voyage to Northern Africa only two weeks after the attacks. The film occurs around four cities in the North of Africa. Four spaces along the coast of the continent were a large number of people gather waiting for an opportunity to cross to Europe. The characters of Bab Sebta arise from the description of these 4 environments and the sharing of the daily tasks and rituals of the awaiting.

Fernando Lopes, Probably
(Fernando Lopes, Provavelmente)
by João Lopes
We go with Fernando Lopes on a journey to his origins: on one side, the land, the childhood Várzea; on the other, the cinema, and the convulsions of the Portuguese New Cinema and the utopian desire of transforming the world.
It is not a nostalgic movement, but a demand of truth. The same demand that led him to film the crude and fabulous life of Belarmino Fragoso, on the 1960’s Lisbon, to face the ghosts of the rural world collected in “Uma Abelha na Chuva” by Carlos de Oliveira, or to portrait the submitting solitude of the new closed residential projects, in “Lá Fora”.
On our journey, the limits between cinema and life disappear.

Homeostética
by Bruno de Almeida
HOMEOSTÉTICA 6=0 is a feature documentary about the not-likely-legendary contemporary art group known as the ultimate post-paradox art statement: The Homeostetica Movement.
The Homeostética group appeared in the Lisbon art scene in 1981 formed by six young artists: Pedro Proença, Manuel Vieira, Pedro Portugal, Xana, Ivo and Fernando Brito.
Provocative and irreverent, the Homeostética produced wildly versatile work steeped in such varied influences as pop music, comic strips and film animation.
From 1982 to 1986, the Homeostética organized five group shows, wrote manifestos, made super 8 films and were a visible and uncomfortable presence
in the local art scene.
This documentary features interviews with the six artists, and includes the original films produced by the group as well as rare clips featuring the artists at work.

My Friend Mike at Work
(O Meu Amigo Mike ao Trabalho)
by Fernando Lopes
Mike, my friend, is half Swiss, half American. He is a painter and he has lived for thirty years in Portugal, where he discovered his Island of Loves. So, he is also Portuguese. His atelier is in Alandroal, an enormous former warehouse where we made this film. His nom de guerre is Michael Biberstein. Recognized internationally, his work, in Portugal, is represented at the Gulbenkian, at Serralves and in the Joe Berardo Collection. Abroad, he is represented in the collection of the Queen Sofia Museum in Madrid, the Beaubourg in Paris and the Withney Museum in New York. This, in addition to the many private Portuguese and foreign collections. We decided to initiate this adventure with a conversation in the house of mutual friends. “Mike, why don’t you make a painting for me to film?” “Why not?” Mike responded. “But I should tell you that if I don’t like the painting there’s no film.” “Should we risk it?” he asked. “This is the true nature of cinema, and now of painting.” We took the risk, and here is the result.
