The Face You Deserve
(A Cara que Mereces)
by Miguel Gomes

Franscico, behave! I know it´s your birthday, you are thirty now, it´s carnival, you’ve dressed as a cowboy for the school party and you are surrounded by kids you hate.

But that´s no reason to be so annoying...

Control yourself! Don´t you see no one will put up with you? You break your head, you go to the hospital, you have measles and there´s no one to look after you...

Seven dwarfs would be perfect, just like in Snow White...

Francisco, repeat after me: “Up to your 30’s you have the face God has given you.
After that, you get the face you deserve”.

(...) Belfort anticipating the big European festivals, stilling away the international premiere of A Cara Que Mereces, by the Portuguese director Miguel Gomes. Having the problem of closing itself in the unique place and in children’s games, sometimes amusing, sometimes vain, this first film may probably not be up to all the promises of the initial sung sequence, magnificent. But among it’s numerous gems we find a fabulous image, that will remain as the most beautiful image of the Entre Vues Festival of Belfort: the camera goes down on a sleeping man body, unveils the colourful sleeping pills that fall of his hand, continues do descend, finds them again on the ground and slides through the carpet where wool monsters fight, and then darkens and submerges in the dream.

Stephane Delourme in Cahiers du Cinéma, January 2005

(...) Superior beauty of the first film by the former cinema critic Miguel Gomes. Known for his short films, Gomes signs with A Cara Que Mereces a Portuguese style Peter Pan, between Kitano, Céline and Julie and the seven dwarfs (without Snow White). Consistent on its radical choices, the film develops a sound and visual fantasy that has already seduced, from Portugal to Brazil, more than one writer of the Cahiers (...).

Gomes says that he creates a loving but not sentimental cinema, one more reason to talk in more detail about A Cara Que Mereces, for instance at the moment of its premiere in France.

Behind the Clouds
(Atrás das Nuvens)
by Jorge Queiroga

Paulo is a 12 year old boy who lives in Lisbon with his mother. One day, he finds a bundle of photographs, which include pictures of the grandfather he’s never met. He makes up his mind to go and look for him, even if he has to deceive his mother to do so. With one of the pictures as his guide he goes to the Alentejo and there, at last, meets his grandfather Miguel, an eccentric and solitary man. Together, they set off in an old car, which only their imagination is able to start, on a fantastic journey to unlock the family’s secrets and sorrows…It’s a film about redemption and family ties; a film for all ages able to dream.

A fantastic journey to unlock the family’s secrets and sorrows…
A story of a boy and his grandfather who, through the power of their imagination, grow very close. Together, they uncover and heal the family’s hurt. It is a compelling story, beautifully made, which will attract all generations to watch it together.

Alexandre O`Neill
(Tomai lá do O`Neill)
by Fernando Lopes

It is a personal homage. It is not a biography, nor is it a critical analysis of the poetic work of Alexandre O’Neill. That has been done and redone. It is, above all, about the creative, sentimental and love experiences of a poet, one of the biggest of the Portuguese twentieth century, with whom I have had the privilege of consorting (and of living the adventures of his life, even if, like O’Neill said, “the adventure always ends in a cake shop”).

Pina Bausch Lissabon Wuppertal Lisboa
by Fernando Lopes

Lisbon, open city, bright and warm, receives Pina Bausch and her Company,
Tanztheater Wuppertal.

They arrive for a three week residence, accepting the invitation of Festival dos 100 Dias: the creation of Ein Neues Stϋck von Pina Bausch.

They arrive with their eyes and ears wide open, their veins well tempered, very attentive to the signs, the glitters, the sounds, the scents and the emotions that the city suggests to them along the way.

Afterwards, with the special evocations of their own lives, now mingled with the air of Lisbon, it will come that very rare hour in which all of this and all of the rest, conducted by the geniality of Pina Bausch, will assume a body of it’s own, a new soul.

That will have the name: “a new play by Pina Bausch”. Or something else. And that one will be beautiful: MASURCA FOGO.
